To promote studies of Latter Day Saint religion, especially those pertinent to the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
JWHA will fund two programs (as specifically defined below):
- The Wildermuth Promising Scholarly Paper Award Competition; and
- The Kelley Promising Scholars Travel Grant Award.
Promising scholars, especially students from high school through graduate degrees, who have not established themselves professionally by way of scholarly products (such as meeting papers, journal articles, and books) in areas pertinent to the JWHA's mission. This may also include non-students with a demonstrable scholarly interest in Latter Day Saint religion. These awards are not intended to support people with established careers in Latter Day Saint studies as indicated by previous scholarly products and accomplishments. Winners of an award are not eligible for future participation in the same award program (however, winners of one award may subsequently apply for the other award).
Both awards, as defined further below, require an application to the JWHA. The JWHA Scholarship Committee will evaluate applications based upon on their merit. No award will be given if, in the judgement of the Committee, there are no applications that merit award. Winners of these awards will be required to attend and participate in the forthcoming JWHA annual meeting.
The deadline for the submission of complete applications is 1 May annually. Applications for these awards should be sent to the JWHA President; see the Officers and Staff page for contact information .
Winners of awards will be notified by no later than 1 July. A check in the amount of the scholarly paper award will be issued immediately following notification. A check for the travel grant award will be issued at the JWHA annual meeting.
Application for this award competition requires the submission of a scholarly product (such as a paper, thesis, dissertation, or the like) by the applicant or anyone else (with the permission of the author). Two Wildermuth scholarly paper awards in the amount of $250 each, plus a waiver of annual meeting registration fees and a one-year JWHA membership. A) All winners will be required to present a paper, based on the scholarly product submitted, at the JWHA annual meeting. B) Winning products will be published in the JWHA Journal pending any necessary revisions. C) All winners of this competition will also receive a certificate from JWHA in recognition of this award. A check in the amount of the scholarly paper award will be issued to winners immediately following notification of the grant.
This award is intended to enable promising scholars to attend the JWHA annual meeting (particularly those who might not otherwise be able to attend). Application for this award is by way of a one page letter to the Scholarship Committee that includes: A) the applicant's name, address, and phone number; as well as; B) a concise statement of (1) interest in Latter day Saint studies and (2) reasons for needing financial assistance. Two Kelley Awards in the amount of $100 each, (may be increased to $200 if need justifies), plus a waiver of the annual meeting registrations fees, and a one-year JWHA membership. Travel grant award winners are required to attend the JWHA annual meeting and assist the Executive Director with registration and other meeting business as needed. Winners will receive a check in the amount of the travel grant award at the JWHA annual meeting.
