In June 1836, Elder George Hinkle, in company with Elder Elisha Groves, baptized 10 in the county. Elder Groves traveled on when hinkle was taken unwell, but the remaining elder soon recovered enough to preach and baptize 12 more. Under the date of July 2nd, Elder Hinkle writes to the Messenger and Advocate that Richland County is proving the greatest call for preaching that he has ever witnessed. Though, a lively controversy was urged upon him by some of the Rev. gentlemen in the county who had thought proper to oppose him. His ministry resulted in 44 total baptisms in the area. [Messenger & Advocate, Vol II: 350].
On September 3-4, 1836 a conference was held in Perry church. Daniel Carn, a priest, represented Perry Church as having 37 members, nearly all in good standing. Lewis Wilson represented Perrysville Church with 29 members. Jacob Myers, Presiding Elder in Worthington Township Branch, represented that there were 24 members nearly all in good standing. Daniel Carn, William Rood, Lewis D. Wilson and George C. Wilson were ordained Elders James Huntsman, a priest in Perry Church, then off on a mission, was also to be ordained an Elder when he returned. William Wirick, John McVay and John Jenkins were ordained Priests. Nathan Packer, a Teacher, and Jacob Werick ordained a Deacon. Sabbath at ten o'clock the meeting was opened by Elder Myers who addressed the conference on the subject of the depravity of man, and he was followed by Elder George A. Smith on the gospel. Two others came forward at this conference for baptism. [Messenger & Advocate, II: 415].
