Shoal Creek at Haun's Mill
Iron wheel (part of the water wheel), sometimes identified as a millwheel faceplate, was uncovered from the stream bank in the 1970s. This artifact may now be seen at the LDS Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Missouri Participants
All land in what became Caldwell County, Missouri, initially belonged to the United States Government. In keeping with Federal land acts, some land was transferred to the State of Missouri for governmental and educational purposes. The remainder was offered for sale to individuals. Land sales were held regularly at the government land office at Lexington, Missouri. Sales were publicized by announcement in newspapers and circulars in advance. Federal law provided that public lands were to be sold at auction in minimum tracts of 80 acres, at a minimum price of $1.25 per acre. Auctioned land seldom brought more than the established minimum. A purchaser could enter a tract of land by paying the surveyor's fee, thereby declaring an intention to pay for the land. Such purchases were to be paid off within two to three years or they would again become subject to government sale. Upon payment of the full amount of sale, the purchaser received a deed from the government in the form of a United States land patent.
