MISSOURI MORMON FRONTIER FOUNDATION

Bill and Annette Curtis represented MMFF at the dedication of the new commemorative marker at the Elijah Abel grave, in Salt Lake City, Utah, 28 September 2002.

Abel was honored for his role as the first African-American ordained in the Mormon Movement, in the 1830s and 1840s.
Abel moved to Salt Lake City, Utah, in the 1850s.

Hugh and Diane Barlow, of Salt Lake and former Directors of the Independence Mormon Visitors Center, coordinated local arrangements.
A number of officials of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took part in the commemoration.
