||The symposium opens Friday evening with a Meet the Authors Open House, with book signings by
authors from Signature Books, Herald Publishing House, and John Whitmer Books.
Following the open house and registration period, we are pleased to welcome Stephen M. Veazey,
prophet-president of the Community of Christ, who will deliver the second annual Wallace B. Smith
Lecture, entitled "Stepping into the River of Revelation in the Restoration Tradition."
Saturday is a full day with 21 plenary and concurrent sessions to choose from.
The symposium's keynote address, "Chapters in the Story of Christian Scripture: Before and After the Bible",
will be presented by Stephen J. Patterson (bio),
Professor of New Testament at Eden Theological Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.
Other featured speakers on Saturday include Community of Christ Historian Emeritus Richard P. Howard,
Community of Christ Theologian Anthony J. Chvala-Smith, and Signature Books founder and publisher
George D. Smith.
The remainder of the day is a series of concurrent sessions with paper presentations
and panel discussions covering a wide variety of theological and religious and cultural studies topics.
A $6.00 pizza lunch will be made available on Saturday at the conference venue. Saturday dinner is on your own.
Sunday morning opens with a plenary presentation by Community of Christ Apostle Dale E. Luffman,
followed by a tour of the newly reopened sanctuary of the Community of Christ Temple, the Temple
Museum, and the Community of Christ Auditorium. All Sunday events take place at the Community of Christ
Kansas City International Airport is 30 miles from central Independence, and one-way shuttle rides will cost you
more than $50. If you are flying to the Symposium, we recommend renting a car rather than taking a shuttle or taxi
because you will likely spend less money and will have more freedom to get around Independence and the Kansas City metro
If you need accommodations in Independence, JWHA has reserved a block of rooms at the Crossland Economy Studios,
located five miles south of the Graceland
campus, where rooms come with kitchenettes and work areas. Please mention the Restoration Studies Symposium when
booking your room to receive the special conference rate. Our block of rooms is being held until April 2, 2009.
