Scattering of the Saints: The Diverse Expressions of the Restoration is the theme for the 34th Annual
Meeting of the John Whitmer Historical Association, to be held at Lake Doniphan Retreat Center in Excelsior
Springs, Missouri (about 30 miles north of Independence) on Sept. 28 Oct. 1, 2006.
Program Chair Alex Baugh and Co-Chair Steven Shields invite scholars, students, researchers and enthusiasts
to submit proposals for papers that will explore the history, doctrines, personalities, etc., of the panoply
of church organizations that comprise the Latter Day Saint Movement from the earliest schisms in the church
to the most recent.
Examples of possible paper topics:
- An explanation of the work of Otto Fetting and W. A. Draves and the several
churches which believe John the Baptist visited those men and others on more than 100 occasions over the past
80 years.
- Explorations of recent trends in the so-called Restorationist groups would provide interesting
comparative studies not only with the Community of Christ, but also amongst the various groups themselves.
- Studies of various books of scripture that have been developed since the corpus of material produced by Joseph
Smith, Jr. could provide informative insights into the concept of continuing revelation.
- Researchers might follow development in the practices of Mormon fundamentalist groups.
These and all other proposals relating to all aspects of the Latter Day Saint movement are welcome. The deadline
for proposals is February 28, 2006.
Please send all 1-page proposals with a brief CV by e-mail to: Proposals@JWHA.info
