2003 Best Article Award

"National Culture, Personality, and Theocracy in the Early Mormon Culture or Violence"
by D. Michael Quinn

Our award for the year's Best Article carries an award for $100.00, in addition to a handsome plaque.

D. Michael Quinn, winner of the 2003 JWHA Best Article Award
Last year's winner was Eric Rogers for his article on Mark Forscutt in the Whitmer journal.

The committee's choice for the best article this past year goes to D. Michael Quinn, for his paper at last year's John Whitmer meeting in Nauvoo, published in our special Nauvoo issue. His article was entitled "National Culture, Personality and Theocracy in the Early Mormon Culture of Violence."

Michael's articles over the years have sometimes been long enough that he might have considered expanding them into a book and gone for the $1,000.00 check! Mike is known for his exhaustive research and this article is no exception. His article is particularly relevant for the Community of Christ as it seeks to uphold the Christian quest for peace as central to its mission. Understanding our heritage, originating in a violent frontier setting, is important in our quest to become a peace church.

We thank Mike for his important contribution on this vital topic, and happily present him with the Best Article Award for this year.
